Cultured Christchurch
Where Dunedin brings you a slice of Scotland, Christchurch delivers something quintessentially English. So English in fact that you can don a straw boater and go punting on the Avon River. Following the devastating earthquake of 2011, the city has been rebuilding, pop-up cafes and bars springing up on the streets. Take the Christchurch Gondola and you’ll gain sensational views of the Port Hills and picturesque harbour of Lyttleton with the Southern Alps visible on the horizon.
Fabulous Fiordland
On the South Island’s western shores, you can voyage into inlets guarded by awe-inspiring cliffs or hike up razor-sharp ridges. It’s time to fall for a true Kiwi institution. New Zealand is the undisputed capital of bungee jumping, and the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge near Queenstown is where it all began. If you want to be tied up and thrown from a great height, this is the place on earth to do it. You can even share the experience with a friend and go tandem. But if this sounds too tame, head for the Nevis alternative, which is even higher and scarier!
