Colourful Kanpur is Uttar Pradesh’s largest city and home to around two and a half million inhabitants. The British Raj played a huge part in the city’s development. It was one of India’s centres for the industrial revolution and as result you’ll see many examples of grand Victorian architecture. But above all Kanpur offers a seductive blend of all that makes India famous – a vivid mixture of sights, smells and sounds. Alongside the street stalls and markets you can visit local attractions ranging from the world-renowned Allen Forest Zoo to the archaeological digs at Jajmau.
One of Kanpur’s greatest claims to fame is also its most contentious. Before it became Kanpur it was Cawnpore. In 1857 a lengthy siege between the British and forces led by Nana Sahib ended in surrender and the subsequent slaughter of hundreds of mainly women and children. Events are disputed to this day and led to years of bloody conflict. Thankfully all of this is now in the past. Visit Bithoor, where events took place, now and you’ll see a place of worship where pilgrims come to bathe in the Ganges.

The temples of Kanpur
The gleaming white marble towers of the Shri Radhakrishna Temple are an impressive testament to the amibition and skill of a post-war generation of Indian architects. The five shrines are dedicated to Hindu worship and if your visit is during a festival you’ll witness colourful and exuberant celebrations around the temple and in the park at Phool Bhagh. Another gleaming Kanpur place of worship is the Jain Glass Temple, a glittering example of intricate and elaborate design which shimmers both day and night.
