Cuttack, anglicised from Katak, literally means ‘The Fort’ and this ancient city built on a spit of land is dominated by it. The Fort in question – Barabati – lies close to the cricket ground and the remains of its stone walls leave you in no doubt of the strategic importance of this compact city. Built around 989AD it was the power base for successive rulers and dynasties until the Brits took over and moved the capital to Bhubaneswar.
Fortress Cuttack still packs a powerful punch and revels in its history. Even its train station is built to resemble a castle with turrets! To get a flavour of India’s complex history check out the museum dedicated to Subhash Chandra Bose, a freedom fighter courted by Nazi Germany. Visit the Kataka Chandi temple or Kadam Rasool mosque for colourful and cultured religious architecture. The town is also famous for its healthy Oriya cuisine so you can indulge in some of its fish and rice-based dishes without worrying too much about your waistline.

Things to do....
Cuttack’s strong point
Much of it may lie in ruins but Cuttack’s Barabati Fort is the place to visit to get a sense of this city. It is said that the ancient King Marakata Keshari chose this spot to control a crucial location at the meeting of two rivers. Over the centuries the Fort was expanded and at one point stood nine storeys high. Since then floods and fighting may have brought it crashing back to earth but it’s still a fascinating site for history lovers and tourists alike.
